Money and the economy
Two currencies, which one shops charge, and what you lose when you die.
Two currencies, and they are not interchangeable
| Symbol | Where it comes from | Where it goes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Money | $ | Shops, quests, rewards, selling | NPC shops, town upgrades, island borders |
| Coins | ∴ | The store, rewards, crates, quests | The coinshop only |
Money cannot buy coins, and coins cannot buy from the NPC shop. They are deliberately separate: coins are the premium currency and money is the working one.
Your sidebar shows both, on the Money and Coins lines.
Earning money
- Selling to the NPC shop. Always available, always the worst rate.
- Selling to players. The auction house and direct trading. This is where real money is made.
- Rewards — hourly, daily and weekly, from
/rewards. - Jobs — pays money as you level a job.
- Quests and bounties — the bounty board pays money, class XP and coins.
- Town Defence — events pay those who show up.
Spending money
- The NPC shop. Buy and sell, with a couple of dozen categories. Buy prices are always above sell prices.
- Town reputation. Buying in the town shop is cheaper the better your reputation is with the town — and selling is unaffected, deliberately. Paying you more while also charging you less would reward reputation twice.
- Skyblock borders. 32 blocks free, then 64 for $25k, 96 for $100k, 128 for $400k, 192 for $1.5M, 256 for $5M.
- Upgrades and repairs at the town quartermaster.
The death penalty
Every death costs you 10% of your money. Mob, fall, lava, drowning, another player — the balance does not care how it happened.
There is one exception. In the PvP arena, a kill pays the killer instead of destroying the money. Outside the arena the money is simply gone, because there either is no killer or paying one would be farmable. See PvP arena.
Death takes a percentage, so it can never take more than you have, and there is no floor below which you are safe. The way to avoid it is not to carry money you are not about to spend.
A history lesson worth one line
Until recently the server had two money stores running in parallel, and some of what players were paid went into the one nothing was reading. That is fixed: there is one balance now, the sidebar reads it, every shop charges it, and the numbers players had were carried across unchanged. If you remember a balance that disagreed with itself, that was this.
